Dubuque Community Y Health and Wellness Programs

  • Activate America - Activate America is a national initiate designed to get Americans moving. Developed in 2004 as one of the National YMCA main initiatives, Activate America is designed to get Americans more physically active and motivated to be a more active participant in their own health care. The Dubuque Community Y sign on to this initiative in 2006, to date we have implemented both of the Activate America events (Healthy Kids day and America on the Move week), as well as a program to provide some additional health/physical education and activities through our after school childcare. Sponsorship of these two programs is assisted by back-to-back PepsiCo/YMCA grants, only facility in the state of Iowa to receive such awards. For more information on Activate America in the Tri-State area and how you could help, please contact Andy Gillip.

  • SilverSneakers - The number one exercise program for Medicare eligible individuals is available at the Dubuque Community Y. In order to qualify for SilverSneakers members must be on Medicare and a SilverSneakers approved supplemental insurance provider. While eligibility for this program is limited many of our Active Older Adults enjoy our SilverSneakers exercise class and our SilverSneakers monthly social events. For more information please contact our Health and Wellness Director.
  • Personal Training - Do you have a problem designing your own exercise programs or keeping the intensity you so desire? It might be time for you to look at our Personal Training program.
  • Ask a Trainer - Deciphering Health information from hundreds of sources is very difficult. Adding to the difficulty is the impact many personal variables have on your exercise routine. To make this process easier the Dubuque Community Y has enlisted one of our Personal Trainers to answer your questions. Please keep in mind that all recommendations are opinions expressed by our trainers and specific exercise programming cannot be given without a full evaluation. Ask the Trainer

  • Indoor Cycling - With 16 indoor cycling bikes and up to 25 classes offered each week, it is easy to see why Indoor Cycling is the most popular group exercise class at the Dubuque Community Y. Cycling Schedule
  • Group Exercise Classes - If you are someone who enjoys a social atmosphere, while participating in a full-scale workout, take a look at our Group Exercise classes.
  • Work Hardening Programs - As part of a cooperative effort with the Tri-State Occupational Health Center , the Dubuque Community Y is an active participant in the Tri-State Occupational Health work hardening program for their clients on worker's compensation. The effectiveness of this program has been repeatedly demonstrated. Worker's compensations clients must be referred by their Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist and will perform activities only approved by their therapist. For more information please contact our Health and Wellness Director.
  • Post-Rehab Program - Completion of Physical or Occupational Therapy is a huge step towards recovery from serious injuries. By the time most people finish therapy they are quite capable of living a fully functional life, however they may not be quite as capable of participating in physical activities, as they would like. This may be from residual effects of the injury or de-conditioning that occurs with a long recovery period. This is where a facility like the Dubuque Community Y may be able to help. Using our facilities and staff knowledge we will design a program, based on your therapy outcomes, to give you a safe and effective workout. For more information please contact our Health and Wellness Director .

All new members are required to have an orientation prior to using the Wellness Center . Orientations are conducted free of charge and are scheduled for approximately 90 minutes. The Wellness staff wants to help you meet your fitness goals. An orientation consists of a consultation to discuss your interest and options, instruction on the safe and proper use of the cardio, resistance and fitness equipment and if you desire, the design of a personalized fitness program based upon the goals discussed during your consultation. Orientation appointments can be made by stopping at or calling the Member Service Desk at 563-556-3371.

Body Composition Analysis

Physical Wellness has many components, one of which is fitness. While most people focus on weight as a guide to fitness, science is telling us that body fat percentage, cardiovascular fitness, and other health indicators (like blood pressure, blood sugar balance, hormone balance, and bone health) are far more important than weight. In keeping with this philosophy the Dubuque Community Y Wellness staff invites you to have your body fat percentage checked. Members can have percentage of body fat, percentage of lean body mass measured fast, easy, pain free and free of charge. For more information on this service, please feel free to contact Katie McFarland.
