Swim Lesson Levels

Parent-Tot, ages 6-24 months
The primary objective of the parent-tot class is to acclimate both parent and child to the water environment. The child will begin to understand the differences between moving on land and moving in the water; while the parent will become more aware of how to teach their child how to be safer in the water. The class is designed to create a fun and engaging environment. Activities are based on the developmental abilities of the child.

Perch, ages 18-36 months
This class is the follow up to Parent-Tot. There will still be many games, but begins to incorporate more water skills and prepare the child to move into group classes. This class is perfect for children who are too advanced for parent-tot, but who are not ready for Pike. Parents will be participating in the water.

Preschool Swim Lessons, ages 3-5 years

Pike
This level helps children develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water, and develop independent movement in the water. Designed for new swimmers. Will learn basic strokes, kicking skills and blowing bubbles.

Eel
This advanced beginner level reinforces Pike skills. It is for children who are comfortable in the water. They are taught to kick, dive, float and perform the progressive paddle stroke. Children can swim across the pool without assistance by the end of this level.

Ray
At this level children review previous skills, improve stroke skills, learn more personal safety and rescue skills, build endurance, swim on their front and back, learn to tread water and perform more progressive diving skills.

Starfish
Children will review previously learned skills and refine their strokes as well as personal safety, rescue and floating skills. Children can swim a length of the pool on their front and back at the end of this level.

Youth Swim Lessons, ages 6 and older

Polliwog
This is the beginning level for school-age children. It gets children acquainted with the pool, the use of floatation devices and floating. By the end of this level, they should know the front stroke, side and back paddle. Children can swim across the pool by the end of this level.

Guppy
The children continue to practice and build upon basic skills now performing more skills without the aid of a floatation device. They are introduced to lead-up strokes to the front and back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke.

Minnow
This is the initial intermediate level. The children further refine the lead-up strokes they have learned as their skills become more like those normally used in swimming. They learn still more synchronized swimming, diving skills, personal, boating and safety rescue.

Fish
At this advanced level, students work on refining their strokes and increasing their endurance. They develop the ability to perform more complex combinations of synchronized swimming movements and diving skills.

Flying Fish
At this advanced level, students work on refining their strokes with a strong emphasis on increasing their endurance. They develop the ability to perform all strokes with open turns and continue to learn new strokes.

Shark
The students at this level continue to improve their strokes, with starts and turns, and are introduced to the inverted breaststroke, the trudgen crawl and the over-arm sidestroke.
