WELCOME TO THE DUBUQUE COMMUNITY Y DOLPHIN SWIM TEAMCOACH’S PHILOSOPHY
The Dubuque Dolphin Swim Team Coaches are here to develop and help build the swimming technique of all participants in an atmosphere of fun. They are to serve as a stepping stone from 'learn to swim' programs into competitive swimming, maintaining swimmers' interest and fostering quality technique and a lifelong participation in the sport. The Dubuque Dolphin Swim Team is a competitive program that focuses on all the strokes to promote a life long activity that stresses goals and the four core values; caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility, of the Dubuque Community Y. The participants will feel a sense of team belonging which will help them develop good leadership skills, self-esteem, and individual successes. The tech/drill week will be held on Tuesday and Thursday, October 27 & 29, for swim team members only, not pre-team, at regular practice time for your age group. Come kick off practice early by signing up early! CAPACITY The swim team will be limited to 90 participants on the team. PRE-TEAM AS AN OPTION The purpose behind pre-team is to get swimmers acquainted with competitive swimming while developing correct swimming techniques. Pre-team is a feeder program for the swim team in hopes that the swimmers on pre-team will become familiar and comfortable with their swimming abilities enabling them to move up to swim team following a year or two on the pre-team. Swimmers should have some swimming background before joining the pre-team. Swimming lessons at the Dubuque Community Y are recommended before becoming part of this team. Practices for pre-team will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-6:45 pm. Pre-team will start on November 3 and end on January 28. Swimmers will be able to swim in the all the home swim meets at the Dubuque Community Y, except the Dolphin Invite. The first meet which is the Dolphin Invite, will be a trial meet for both the parents and swimmers. Swimmers are expected to come walk through and watch the first meet to get comfortable and acquainted with how a swim meet is ran. At this time, parents will be asked to shadow a few swim team parents to help familiarize themselves with the volunteer roles. After the first meet, parents will be required to volunteer their time. Without parent help, we would not be able to run home meets. Thank you for your help and dedication to making the meets successful. To make the pre-team swimmers feel more part of the swim team, pre-team will also be asked to purchase swimsuits, caps, participate in the fundraiser, and join us in the organized events for the swim team/pre team. Responsibility falls upon parents to transport qualifying swimmers to these meets. By YM/YWCA regulations, swimmers should ride the bus to the away meet but may ride home with parents if a note, from a parent, is provided to the coaches. You may carpool home with others as long as the parents are aware that it is the driver’s responsibility, not the Y’s. There are some parents who are willing to car pool to assist in parent transportation to away meets. If you are interested in car-pooling or would like a ride to an away meets, please ask. It is a Dubuque Community Y policy that all children, ages 8 or under, who participate in a Y activity, must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. Other Y’s that we visit have the same 8 & under policy. If your child is 8 or under and wishes to participate in swim meets, home or away, they must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 18 years of age and willing to be responsible for them throughout the meet.
